A MAN MUST CRY is a community-based mental health movement born out of lived experience. Founded in 2025 by James Nyabera a passionate mental health advocate, lived experience champion and Africa CDC MHLP Change maker to promote men’s emotional well-being and mental health support in Africa. We are mental health survivors and storytellers who exist to challenge the harmful cultural norms that equate masculinity with emotional silence, instead creating safe spaces where men and boys can openly express vulnerability without stigma. While our primary focus is on men’s mental health, we work with women, youth, and allies to build a supportive, inclusive environment for emotional healing, prevention of suicide, gender-based violence (GBV), and stronger thriving communities.
Our fathers, partners, brothers, and friends are facing a mental health crisis yet it’s rarely talked about it. Men are dying too young, and we can’t afford to stay silent.
In Kenya and across Africa, men’s mental health is a silent crisis: Suicide rates among Kenyan men are three times higher than women (WHO, 2023). Depression & anxiety affect nearly 1 in 4 men, but less than 20% seek help due to stigma, cost, accessibility and lack of safe spaces. In many communities’ cultural norms teach boys to “be strong” by suppressing emotions, leading to untreated mental health challenges, strained relationships, violence, substance abuse, and higher rates of suicide among men
We exist to break this cycle by:
Post-COVID realities, economic hardship, unemployment, and rising social pressures have deepened the mental health crisis for men. If left unaddressed:
A world where men are free to express emotions, seek help without judgment, and live mentally healthy.
To create safe, stigma-free spaces and community-led interventions that support men’s emotional well-being, prevent suicide and GBV through community engagement, education, and advocacy to build a culture of empathy and healing.
Real change through comprehensive, community-driven initiatives
A targeted suicide prevention and early-intervention campaign focusing on men at high risk of emotional breakdown, self-harm, violence, or social isolation. The campaign equips communities to recognize warning signs, respond early, and link men to support before crisis escalates.
A gender-transformative program addressing how untreated mental distress, trauma, and harmful masculinity contribute to GBV. We work with men as agents of change, promoting emotional regulation, accountability, non-violent coping, and healthy relationships.
Interactive mental health education and mentorship for boys and young men in schools
Regular safe spaces where men connect, share openly, and find emotional support without judgment
A creative advocacy platform using spoken word, storytelling, and media to break the silence around men’s mental health.

We believe that if men are given safe spaces to express themselves, access to mental health support, and encouragement from their families and communities, they will develop healthier coping strategies. This will lead to:
Awareness → Engagement → Healing Spaces → Skills & Support → Healthier Men & Communities
At A MAN MUST CRY, we believe mental health is more than just talking, it’s about real change in people’s lives. We combine professional help, cultural wisdom, lived experience, and practical skills to help men heal, grow, and thrive. Our work is built on:
We start by creating safe spaces where men can speak openly. Using simple tools and careful listening, we help uncover the real reasons behind their struggles like trauma, loss, joblessness, substance use, family problems, or illness.
Why it matters: You can’t fix what you don’t understand.
We bring boys and men together in small groups based on shared experiences. With the help of trained guides, we mix talking, peer support, storytelling, creative arts, and mindfulness to help people feel connected, supported, and understood.
Why it matters: Healing is easier when you’re not alone.
From each group, we train those who have made meaningful progress in healing to guide others. These champions run circles, mentor peers, and spread mental health awareness in their communities.
Why it matters: Change lasts longer when it comes from the community itself.
Once someone has started healing, we help them find ways to earn an income. We co-create to offer training, mentorship, and small start-up support for businesses or jobs.
Why it matters: Financial stability keeps the mind at peace.
We make sure healing reaches beyond one person to families and whole communities. This includes:
